In many parts of the world, people are forced to defecate on the ground surface around their homes and water sources.  This practice is a result of both the poor

economic situation and the lack of public health education.  The direct consequence of this practice is a level of preventable illness that is extreme and an accelerated death rate, especially among the very young and the aged.

To address this devastating public health threat, PHI has developed programs in third world countries that have provided the installation of tens of thousands of latrines.

After organizing the construction of latrines, PHI provides extensive public health training on latrine maintenance, personal hygiene, and disease prevention for rural village families.

PHI programs have provided for the construction of ten of thousands of sanitary latrines in villages throughout the third world..
